The GTX 1080 Ti proved me wrong. Based on a not-quite-fully-enabled GP102 GPU (more on this in a second), like its predecessors the GTX 1080 Ti is meant to serve as a mid-generation performance boost for the high-end video card market.

We’ll start as always with the GPU at the heart of the card, GP102.
It took me several runs to accept this fact.
That full GP102 core has been used in only one card so far, the professional-level Quadro P6000 released back in October last year. And, despite the GTX 1080 Ti essentially completing the Pascal lineup, Nvidia aren’t necessarily calling time on their current architecture. The GP102 GPU used in those top two Nvidia cards is not actually the full core.
Nvidia did the same thing with their inaugural Titan, releasing a Titan Black the following year utilising the full GK110 Kepler core. This would make it the biggest performance leap a Ti card has offered over its base model. Real-world performance will of course be influenced by a blend of these factors, so I’ll be curious to see how much the major jump in memory bandwidth helps given that the ROPs aren’t seeing the same kind of throughput boost. But make no mistake, GP102 is quite a bit larger than the GP104 GPU at the heart of the GTX 1080, and that translates to a lot more hardware for pushing pixels. At 4K, the Ti beat the GTX 1080 by a stunning 53 percent in my tests. This is six degrees C shy of the card’s thermal limit.
In what has now become a bona fide tradition for NVIDIA, at their GDC event this evening the company announced their next flagship video card, the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti. It’s possible the that Ti’s larger, faster frame buffer may have removed a performance bottleneck and allowed the GPU to leapfrog the competition.
For those of you familiar with the not-quite-consumer NVIDIA Titan X (Pascal), this is the same configuration as that card, and in fact there are a lot of similarities between those two cards. The DX12 version of Rise of the Tomb Raider represented its stiffest test, but even with everything maxed out, it was still able to run at over 90 average FPS. But with improved yields broken chips should be less of a problem in production so it’s conceivable for Nvidia to start thinking about using the full 3,840 core chip to fill out a refreshed line of Titan cards. To add more perspective, the Ti was 118 percent faster than the GTX 1070, which is incredibly fast in its own right.
