One entrant called Cycloped was an absurd contraption with a horse walking endlessly over a treadmill to generate power. It was won by the 'Rocket', designed by Robert Stephenson (1803- 1859). The Rocket was the only locomotive that completed the trials, averaging 12 miles per hour (19 kmph) with a top speed of 30 miles per hour (48 km/h). George Stephenson, the engineer tasked to build the railway, strongly advocated using locomotives, but some of the directors of the railway preferred the old and tested method of cable haulage.
