I do feel this one has a better “pop sensibility” to it than Prisoner, and by that I mean I keep coming back to this album with greater frequency because it’s so catchy in so many different ways. Thoroughly enjoyed the variety of songs off of both his new album as well as his older ones. It’s a fun record to pop in now and again, but overall this barrage of songs doesn’t stand a chance against his better albums. Fun, fast, and contains a few of the best one-minute songs ever belted out, but that’s about it. The highlight, oddly enough, isn’t even a song that Adams wrote. Some have a distinct 1980s Springsteen/Hornsby vibe to them, but by the end it’s all Adams and his ability to make a song both sad and addictive at once.
My only real regret with this EP was that it wasn’t a full-length release. It’s just...an album, fairly somber at times, and other times it gets up and runs, but never for long.

Adams certainly hits his trademark grooves of roots rock, and the album is worth the price of admission for the album opener “Dirty Rain.” Unlike some of his more dense works, Ashes & Fire makes for a relatively easy listen, which is also why it doesn’t rank any higher. You'll find plenty here to make the miles pass so much easier on a long road trip. Placing this one so low warrants some death threats, I know, but I was never able to find a powerful connection with this album.
