Designed by the Ottoman Empire‘s greatest architect, Mimar Sinan, the Süleymaniye dominates the city’s Third Hill, just north of Istanbul University, overlooking the Golden Horn (). Imperial Architect Sinan also provided for the circulation of air in the mosque by the excavation of underground vaulted tunnels. The design of the Süleymaniye also plays on Suleyman's self-conscious representation of himself as a 'second Solomon.' Subsequent repairs damaged what was left of the original decoration of Sinan.
