I can’t remember where I first saw this book, but I was immediately interested. This book is a real-life story about Dr Max Pemberton's first year as a junior doctor as the reality of his career choice and training set in. Pemberton describes well the horror of that first year but tempers it with some great humour. The NHS should not be a for-profit organisation and this book gently and wittily gives the reasons why.

I really liked how this book was divided into months of the year, as well as days within the months, which gave it a journal feel. They will look at their peers and see that they haven’t keeled over and think that adults are trying to spoil their fun. Pemberton is at his best when he abandons jokes. We don't want our doctors to be better than us. Others say that they read it and it really scared them. What pills should I be taking or avoiding? That may come later. Junior doctors always had a hard time in my nursing days & it looks like little has changed.

The stories are the usual "I'm a new doctor and I have no idea what I'm doing and I haven't slept in a while" but he also addresses things like racism. The author describes this book as both fiction and an autobiography which means that he has changed some parts of his story to keep the details of his patients and friends private.
Overall it’s an enjoyable read, Reviewed in the United States on February 9, 2016. Disabling it will result in some disabled or missing features. I wanted to write about it in as open and honest a way as possible, moving the debate on in the media. It taking me so long to read reflects the quality of the book.
