Get the LHT if your goal is only touring. I was wondering which would be better for touring Eastern Canada and Europe.Due to the small difference in price it doesn't matter that much. But then I ended up with a Kona Sutra so what do I know. Buy a Galaxy if it's the cheapest bike you can afford and intend to ditch it on craigslist immediately after the trip. Consider something else! I also wouldn't do these things on a Dawes Galaxy because I would only buy one if I were forced to by financial situations. I've tried asking Dawes but they've only referred me to the Reynolds website, which isn't all that helpful .... unless you're a metallurgist I guess. It means the manufacturer can get away with fewer sizes of frame .... Look at the drive train, gear changers, saddle and wheels for the difference in spec.
I love it. There are three Galaxy models, and IIRC, the Galaxy and Super have the same frame, with a horizontal top tube, while the Ultra has a sloping top tube, in the older ranges.
The new Dawes bikes seem cheap and have unattractive paint jobs, and the LHT is boring bc everyone has one. I own two Galaxy bikes myself, my son has one, and I would buy another in the future if I had to. You must log in or register to reply here.
If you want a bike that you'll love afterwards also, look into the many bikes that can handle touring but also make great every-day bikes. The equivalent to the old Galaxy and probably the Surly is the Ultra Galaxy or Galaxy Classic - not sure which is closest. The Galaxy will be acceptable for touring, and a combo of acceptable and annoying for non-touring rides. I would recommend a Brooks saddle whatever you decide on because they are insanely comfortable and neither the Dawes or the LHT comes with one. Consider something else! As I understand it the new galaxy isn't up to the level of the older model but is a replacement for their more budget Horizon model. New LHTs are fully loaded however, and will do everything you may wish to do. Having restored my Dawes [which weighs in at a tad over10kg, not bad even now] I think they form an easy and rewarding project. The next year Dawes increased the diameter of the top tube Quite rightly too in my opinion as mine shimmys like a pig fully loaded!

I'm in the UK and would've ended up paying over the odds for a Surly (compared to US prices) which put me off as it comes without racks and fenders. Press J to jump to the feed. Buy a Crosscheck if you want a bike afterwards. Dawes has been making its Galaxy tourer for many, many years and it has become legendary among the British touring crowd. One piece of advice however, strip, clean and regrease EVERY bearing, it will be time well spent.
Dawes Super Galaxy 53 cm - Reynolds 531 ST with 700c Wheels. all depends on what you want from the bike i have friends that have restored old road bikes and gone way over the top i.e using carbon fibre seatposts, bars, wheels even! I don't know about Eastern Canada, but either bike is overkill for touring Europe. If it is an older Galaxy, it will be lighter, certainly, as Reynolds 531 has low weight as an attractive feature. All the bits are available on E Bay at reasonable prices and [as I've said before] I restored mine for under £30 [ok I blew the budget on a Brooks saddle, but that's just me]. BB may be sealed but they last well and may be ok, if not they are simple to change [of course if it's the old ball type just clean and grease as above].
I love old Dawes bikes [yeah, I know, you can get treatment]. Its moments like these when I'm confused if I'm in a technology subreddit or a bicycle one... We chose both!
As you say change tyres and tubes AND brake blocks, if on a tight budget cables can often be saved [if not damaged] simply by stripping out the inners cleaning and lubricating.
