Doubtless, every tool has its pros and cons; and implications can be drawn from such pros and cons to foster better discussions on the Internet. The audiences also no longer act solely as the readers but take on new roles: the role of citizen journalists by reporting their own news; and the role of editors by constantly recommending which types of news their friends should follow on social media. A paper by the Columbia Journalism Review states, “, Social media hasn’t just swallowed journalism, it has swallowed everything. The Columbia Journalism Review says, “People today are exposed to news mixed with gossip, opinion, hot takes, and branded content, from a variety of sources but often through a single platform–mainly social networks, which tend toward a clustering of like-minded individuals.”. Many anchors feel the need to shout louder just to be heard, seen, and clicked upon. The anchors play a very important role in shaping people's minds and their opinion and the reaction is all the more dangerous sometimes. All news outlets use social media, not only to share their stories, but to learn about what else is happening. Thus, facing strong dissents on mainstreams and social media, the government was pressured to take the responded actions.
And despite all the accusations of bias against mainstream media, research shows it remains a trusted source of news. Put in other words, Israel’s mainstream media presents an elitist worldview representative of a small minority, while social media reflects the real world of the masses, collectively known by the crude phrase “the man on the street.” This mismatch between the two forms of media has yet to translate into real power.
In sum, the debate should not be which method of communication is better than the other. Unlike the newspapers we read or the television we watch, social media like twitter, instagram, facebook, etc connects us instantly to other people who are interested in the same topic of discussions. Users should be educated to not accept all information at face value and believe in its accuracy.
